Inspired by the information processing of bees, a research consortium from Dresden, Louvain-la-Neuve, Lausanne and Groningen aims to initiate a paradigm shift in the design and hardware of intelligent wireless multimodal sensory systems through the joint project SWIMS (“Stochastic Spiking Wireless Multimodal Sensory Systems”). These novel systems are intended to achieve a breakthrough in energy efficiency at the system level. For this project, the researchers Prof. Gerhard P. Fettweis (TU Dresden), Prof. Elisabetta Chicca (University of Groningen), Prof. Denis Flandre (UCLouvain) and Prof. Adrian M. Ionescu (EPFL) have been awarded a prestigious Synergy Grant from the European Research Council (ERC), combined with funding of 13.5 million euros.
